Craft Name: Pulla Weave Kullu Chappal

Region: Kullu, Himachal Pradesh

CRAFT
HISTORY

The Pulla Weave Kullu Chappal is an adaptation of traditional Himalayan fibre weaving, combining influences from the Kullu weaving tradition and hemp-based footwear of nearby regions. Kullu, known for its colourful weaving heritage, extended its textile techniques to create fibre-based footwear suitable for the valley’s climate. Historically, pastoral communities used woven plant fibres and wool scraps to craft lightweight, breathable, and climate-appropriate slippers. Unlike the heavier Lahaul versions, Kullu Pulla chappals are finer and incorporate subtle patterns inspired by Kullu shawl motifs.

WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE:

  • Combines Kullu weaving motifs with functional footwear design.
  • Lightweight and breathable due to fine fibre weaving rather than thick rope work.
