CRAFT
HISTORY
Chamba Chappal originates from the Himalayan town of Chamba and carries a legacy linked to the region’s royal households and local cobbler communities. Oral histories state that leather footwear techniques entered Chamba through artisans who accompanied a princess from the Kangra/Kashmir region upon marriage into the Chamba royal family. Over time, locals adapted the craft by adding intricate hand-embroidery, merging leatherwork with the traditional “Chamba rumal–style” stitching. Bright floral motifs and fine chain stitch transformed simple slippers into distinctive cultural footwear.
WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE:
- Combination of leather craftsmanship and intricate hand embroidery inspired by Chamba Rumal traditions.
- Use of vivid silk threads and chain-stitch motifs rarely seen in other footwear crafts.
