Banaras toy-making has ancient roots connected to the region’s long-standing woodcarving and lacquer traditions. Craftsmen historically created miniature household objects, animal figures, and ritual toys sold in temple streets and during fairs like Dev Deepawali.
The craft grew under Mughal influence, which brought refined carving, inlay work, and vibrant painted detailing. Local hardwoods from nearby forests provided durability, allowing fine detailing and long-lasting toys. Banaras toys became popular souvenirs for pilgrims visiting Kashi, symbolising the city’s artistic spirit.
