HISTORY
Madur Kathi is a traditional mat-weaving craft of West Bengal, practiced for centuries by artisan communities known as Mahishyas and Namasudras. The craft uses Madur Kathi reeds—a soft, fine grass, native to the riverine belts of Medinipur. Historically, Madur mats were used in Bengal households because they are cooling, lightweight, and durable, making them perfect for the region’s humid climate. During the rule of the Nawab of Bengal, fine Masland mats were specially woven for royal households, characterized by their intricate patterns and superior finish.
