CRAFT
HISTORY

Palm leaf craft dates back to ancient manuscript traditions, where scriptures and epics were etched onto palm leaves. Over time, artisans developed etching, perforation, and painting techniques to illustrate stories from culture, mythology, and astrology. The craft flourished under temple patronage, especially during the Ganga and Gajapati dynasties. Detailed palm leaf manuscripts such as Tala Pattachitra became treasured ritual objects. By the medieval period, it transitioned into decorative panels, talismans, and narrative scrolls.

WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE:

Uses the Palmyra tree and every part if it is used; the leaves are renewable and abundant in southern dry zones.

HOW TO IDENTIFY GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC CRAFT

  • The natural palmyra leaf has an organic fibrous texture and may retain a faint plant scent; colour variation is normal.
  • Small asymmetries in weave, tiny tool marks and non-identical strip widths are signs of handwork.
