CRAFT
HISTORY

Papier mâché in Kashmir locally known as “Kar-e-Qalamdani” traces its origins to the 14th century when the Persian mystic Mir Syed Ali Hamdani introduced Central Asian arts like paper crafting and naqashi. Kashmiri artisans adapted the technique using local materials and aesthetics. Over centuries, it became a symbol of Kashmiri artistry, especially during the Mughal and Afghan periods, when decorative boxes, bowls, Quran stands, and house décor items flourished.

CRAFT MAKING PROCESS

HOW TO IDENTIFY GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC CRAFT

  • Hand-Painted Detailing: It shows extremely fine brushwork, each flower and line is distinct, not printed.
  • Lightweight Base: Authentic products are lightweight but sturdy due to hand-layered pulp.
  • Motif Quality: Look for traditional Naqashi motifs: chinar leaves, hazara, lotus, birds, Persian vines.
  • Gold Highlights: Real tilla work has a subtle shine, not the glittery finish of imitation products.
