Urmul Marusthali Bunkar Vikas Samiti (UMBVS)

Who We Are

The Urmul Trust was set up during June 1988 through a deliberation among more than 120 weavers from villages in Bikaner, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer who decided on establishing an independent weavers’ organization. The weavers made a contribution of Rs. 1000 each towards equity in the society. Urmul Marusthali Bunkar Vikas Samiti, was established in 1991 by the weavers of Bikaner district, Rajasthan to streamline production and marketing activities of their products. Today the organization has a membership of 170 weavers, 150 of them are men and 20 women, spread across 11 villages.

Where we Work

The organization works with weavers from Bikaner, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer districts of Rajasthan.

How we Work

Twelve years since the society was established, the weavers receive fair returns for their weaving. 70% of the cost of production goes to the weaver as weaving costs. 30% of the amount goes to the women for engaging in the pre-weaving process. 50% of the profit accrued by the overall sale of the products goes back to the weavers in the form of a yearly bonus. The weavers benefit from a yearly bonus, interest free loans, compulsory savings and individual life insurance.

All weavers of UMBVS undergo a three-month training program that helps them in developing and upgrading their weaving skills. The weavers have diversified their production into a wide range of products in different materials, the motifs of which originate from their traditional craft 'Pattu'.

Today, apart from uniting rural artisans and keeping alive their traditional craft, the organization has adopted a sustainable development approach. Starting with weaving activities in five villages in two districts, UMBVS is working in a total of 45 villages of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur districts of Western Rajasthan with interventions in the areas of education, health and economic development of Dalits (Meghwals) and women. It runs 14 schools and has formed 10 women’s’ collectives.
